A hardness variation compared with the expected value may indicate degradation, overheating, loss of treatment, wear, surface fatigue or change in material characteristics. When a specification requires a precise scale, it is preferable to measure directly with the required method or verify that the conversion is technically acceptable. The choice of probe or indenter must also be consistent with material, thickness and part geometry.
