This rear support keeps the belt stable and provides consistent stock removal on straight edges and flat surfaces. The workpiece should be moved steadily across the abrasive rather than held in one position. Prolonged contact can create hollows, local rounding, burn marks or visible differences in the finish.
Depending on the Holzstar configuration, the belt unit can be placed horizontally, vertically or at an intermediate angle. A horizontal arrangement is convenient for supporting and moving relatively wide components along the abrasive surface. The vertical position facilitates edge sanding with the workpiece resting on the front table. When the belt works horizontally, contact should be distributed over a sufficiently broad area and the workpiece kept moving. The component should remain flat against the table without being unintentionally tilted.
Areas close to the rollers may be used, where intended by Holzstar, for sanding transitions, curved profiles and concave surfaces. The workable radius depends on roller geometry and belt flexibility. The component should be introduced gradually and guided without lateral pressure that could alter belt tracking. Small parts require suitable holding devices to keep hands away from the abrasive area.
The sanding disc is particularly useful for squaring strip ends, correcting small angles, processing short components and finishing convex profiles. Peripheral speed is not identical across the disc: it is lower near the centre and increases towards the outside. The inner area allows more controlled stock removal, whereas the outer area acts more quickly and aggressively. For precise corrections, light pressure should be used and the working area selected according to the amount of material to be removed.
The workpiece must only be used on the side of the disc moving down towards the table. In this area, abrasive movement presses the component against its support and improves control. Using the rising side may lift the workpiece, cause vibration or throw it from its intended position. Rotation direction should be checked before sanding, and the component must remain supported by the table and, where required, by the angle guide.
The disc table may be adjustable and tiltable according to the Holzstar model. With the table perpendicular to the abrasive, straight ends and edges can be processed. Tilting the table makes bevels and angled surfaces possible. An angle guide maintains repeatable orientation and facilitates the preparation of frames and components for assembly. After adjustment, the setting should be checked with a square or angle gauge and confirmed with a test on scrap material.
When sanding bevels, the workpiece tends to slide towards the lower side of the inclined table. It must therefore be supported safely with both hands or an appropriate holding device. Feed should be gradual and free from sudden impacts. Stops and reference devices are preferable to manual marking alone when several identical components must be produced.
The belt and disc do not need to use the same grit. This is one of the main advantages of Holzstar combination sanders. The belt can carry a more aggressive abrasive for initial stock removal while the disc is fitted with a finer grit for correction and finishing, or the arrangement can be reversed according to the main operation. This permits rapid movement between different processes without continuously replacing abrasives.
Coarse grits are suitable for removing saw marks, residue, irregularities and small amounts of excess material, but they leave deeper scratches. Medium grits refine the surface after rough sanding, while fine grits prepare the wood for painting, oiling, bonding or veneering. A progressive grit sequence provides a more consistent finish because each stage removes the marks left by the previous abrasive.
Wood-grain direction should be considered, particularly during final sanding. On the belt, the workpiece should be moved with the grain whenever its geometry permits. On the disc, the abrasive movement crosses the grain in changing directions, so the component should remain in motion and the result checked frequently. End grain may require more time and can heat rapidly, making moderate pressure essential.
Excessive pressure does not improve productivity proportionally. It may slow the abrasive, overload the motor, heat the component and wear the belt and disc prematurely. Holzstar combination sanders should be used with a smooth feed and controlled pressure, allowing the abrasive grains to remove the material. If performance declines, grit selection, wear, resin and dust deposits, belt tension and abrasive cleanliness should be inspected.
The belt must be correctly tensioned and tracked on the rollers. Insufficient tension can cause slipping and lateral movement, while excessive tension increases the load on bearings and the belt joint. After replacement, any specified running direction must be observed and tracking checked before sanding begins. The belt should run steadily without contacting guards or travelling beyond the roller edges.
The abrasive disc must adhere evenly to its support without bubbles, folds or loose areas. The backing plate should be cleaned thoroughly before a replacement disc is fitted. An abrasive mounted over adhesive residue or dust may cause vibration and irregular material removal. Replacement abrasives must be compatible with the size, attachment system and operating requirements of the particular Holzstar machine.
Small workpieces require special care. If a component cannot be supported securely on the table, a holder, jig or clamping aid should be used. The part must not enter the gap between the table and abrasive, which must remain correctly adjusted. Long boards and profiles also require external support so that their weight cannot tilt the workpiece and round the edge.
Dust extraction is essential because both the belt and disc generate fine particles. Holzstar combination sanders may provide dedicated extraction connections for the different abrasive areas. The extractor must provide appropriate airflow and filtration for wood dust. Poor extraction reduces visibility, clogs the abrasives, increases working temperature and releases more dust into the workshop.
Routine maintenance includes cleaning tables, guides, rollers, the disc backing plate and extraction ports. Resin and dust adhering to the abrasive reduce cutting efficiency and may make a usable tool appear worn. When compatible, a dedicated abrasive cleaner can help remove deposits from the belt.
