Accurate bandsaw operation requires correct blade tension, tracking and guide adjustment. Insufficient tension encourages wandering and vibration, while excessive tension places unnecessary stress on the blade, bearings and frame. Side guides should limit movement without continuously clamping the blade, and the rear thrust support should engage when feed pressure pushes the blade backwards. The height-adjustable upper guide should be positioned just above the workpiece, leaving only the necessary clearance and reducing the unsupported blade length.

Scroll saws use a very narrow reciprocating blade and are intended for small shapes, tight curves, fretwork and internal cut-outs. To produce a closed internal profile, an entry hole is drilled in the workpiece, the blade is passed through it and then reconnected to the tensioning system. The narrow blade can follow complex designs but requires gentle feeding and stable support. Excessive pressure may bend or break the blade, while a speed appropriate to the material improves control and limits burning at the cut edge.

The blade is one of the most important factors in the selection and operation of any woodworking saw. For circular saw blades, the outside diameter, arbor hole, blade-body thickness, kerf, tooth count, tooth geometry, drive holes and maximum permissible speed must be checked. The diameter must be approved for the machine and enclosure, the bore must fit the spindle accurately, and the clamping flanges must be clean and parallel. Reducing rings and adapters should only be used when permitted by the manufacturer and when accurate centring can be maintained.

On circular saw blades, a low tooth count supports rapid material removal and efficient chip evacuation and is particularly suitable for rip cutting solid timber. Tooth count alone does not determine quality; geometry, sharpness, machine rigidity, grain direction and feed rate must be considered together.

Bandsaw blades must have the exact length specified for the machine and a width compatible with the wheels and guides. A coarse tooth pitch provides larger gullets and improves chip evacuation in thick timber and longitudinal cutting. A fine pitch generally produces a smoother surface on thin components and panels but may become overloaded when used on excessive thicknesses. Tooth set is also important because it creates a kerf slightly wider than the blade body and prevents excessive friction against the walls of the cut.

Accessories adapt a saw to specific operations and help preserve its precision. Blades with different widths and tooth configurations change the machine’s ability to follow curves, process thick material or produce a clean surface. Fences, crosscut guides, hold-down devices, side supports, table inserts and dust-extraction components improve workpiece control and repeatability. The workpiece must be stable and correctly supported. Bowed boards, internally stressed material and unsupported panels can move during cutting, close the kerf behind the blade or alter the cutting angle. Rip fences, crosscut guides, clamps, hold-down devices and push sticks should be used according to the operation and machine instructions. Length stops are useful for repetitive cuts, provided that offcuts cannot become trapped between the stop and the blade.

Dust extraction improves visibility of the cutting line and prevents sawdust from accumulating around guides, bandsaw wheels, rotating tables and beneath the work surface. Resin and dust adhering to the teeth increase friction and heat and may make a serviceable blade appear blunt. Regular cleaning makes it easier to inspect the cutting edges and determine whether professional sharpening or replacement is required.
