An adjustable arm allows the working area to be placed vertically, horizontally or at an intermediate angle permitted by the machine, improving access to long profiles, bulky castings and components that cannot be presented comfortably to a fixed unit.

The workpiece must be held securely and brought into contact without impact. Flat components should be supported over the widest practical area and moved evenly across the platen. When chamfering an edge, the required angle should be established with the work rest or a suitable guide and produced through progressive passes. Curved parts should be rotated smoothly while maintaining even pressure. A sharp edge must not be presented in a way that allows the moving belt to catch and pull the part into the machine. Long workpieces require external support, while small, thin, hot or difficult components should be controlled with suitable fixtures, pliers or holding devices that cannot enter the moving mechanism. Side loading the belt should be avoided unless both the machine and the abrasive belt are expressly designed for that operation.

The work rest must be rigid, correctly aligned and adjusted only while the machine is stopped and isolated from its power source. Its distance from the belt should be kept as small as the manufacturer’s safe operating instructions permit. An excessive opening reduces accuracy and can create a trapping point; a rest positioned too close may contact and damage the belt or cause overheating. The clearance must be checked again whenever the belt is changed, its tracking is adjusted or the arm position is altered. Before production resumes, the belt should be run without load and observed from outside its direct trajectory to confirm correct tracking, tension and clearance.

Abrasive-belt selection directly affects removal rate, temperature, surface quality and operating cost. Aluminium oxide is a versatile choice for general-purpose work, zirconia provides effective stock removal in demanding applications, and ceramic abrasives are suited to intensive grinding of tough metals when used with appropriate pressure and machine capability. Silicon carbide can be advantageous for certain non-ferrous alloys and finer finishing operations. Aluminium and other light alloys require belts designed to resist loading, because a belt packed with soft metal stops cutting efficiently and creates additional heat. A stiff backing improves flatness and edge control, while a more flexible backing follows contours and blends curved surfaces more effectively.

Coarse grit is used for heavy burrs, casting gates, riser remnants, scale and weld dressing, but it leaves scratches that must be refined in subsequent stages. Medium grit regularises the surface and prepares it for finishing, whereas fine grit reduces scratch depth before satin finishing, polishing or coating. A logical grit sequence is more efficient than attempting to remove deep scratches directly with a very fine belt. The belt must also match the machine’s permitted format, running direction, operating speed, joint construction and contact system. Separate belts should be reserved for stainless steel and carbon steel to prevent ferrous contamination, and abrasives used on aluminium should not be indiscriminately transferred to operations producing ferrous sparks.

Correct fettling of castings begins by identifying parting-line flash, gate and runner remnants, risers and excess material. Large projections should be reduced through controlled stages instead of prolonged heavy pressure in one location. The operator should keep the casting moving, alternate contact areas and protect datum faces, machined allowances, threads, functional radii and thin sections. Cast iron may have a hard outer skin and produces fine graphite-containing dust. Aluminium and light-alloy castings require careful control of belt loading, heat and combustible dust. Brass and bronze benefit from moderate pressure and effective extraction. The objective is to remove the defect without changing the intended geometry or introducing thermal damage.

Temperature should be managed with a sharp belt, appropriate pressure, short passes and regular movement of the workpiece. If the part becomes too hot to handle safely, grinding should stop and the component should be allowed to cool. External cooling may be used only when it is compatible with the alloy, the process and the machine. Water or coolant must never be applied to equipment designed solely for dry operation or near unsuitable electrical and extraction systems. Thin, hardened or heat-treated parts require additional care because local overheating can cause distortion, temper loss, colour changes or thermal shock.
