LUTRON SC-942 acoustic calibrator for sound level meters and noise measuring instruments. It generates 94 dB and 114 dB calibration levels at 1000 Hz, with compatibility for 0.5" and 1" microphones. Aluminium alloy housing, powered by 2 x 9 V batteries, built-in battery test indicator, Ø 50 mm x 82 mm dimensions and carrying case included. Ideal for quick checks before and after sound measurements.

The LUTRON SC-942 acoustic calibrator is a portable instrument designed to quickly check and calibrate sound level meters and noise measuring instruments. It generates a reference acoustic signal at 1000 Hz, the standard frequency commonly used for sound level meter verification, allowing the technician to check whether the measuring instrument responds correctly before starting a survey, during an inspection procedure or at the end of a measurement session.

The calibrator provides two sound pressure levels: 94 dB and 114 dB. The 94 dB level is the most commonly used reference for routine sound level meter checks, while the 114 dB level allows the instrument response to be verified at a higher sound intensity. The specifications indicate 94 dB ±0.75 dB and 114 dB ±0.9 dB accuracy, with a frequency of 1000 Hz ±2%. These values make the calibrator suitable for technical checks, periodic verification and professional use where confirmation of measuring instrument stability is important.

The LUTRON SC-942 is suitable for 0.5" and 1" microphones, a useful feature because sound level meters can use microphone capsules of different sizes. The 0.5" microphone adapter is included in the supply, together with the instruction manual, adjustment screwdriver and carrying case. Before use, it is always advisable to check the microphone diameter and select the correct coupling, because unstable sealing or off-centre insertion can affect the sound level meter reading.

The cylindrical die-cast aluminium alloy housing provides a robust structure suitable for technical field use. Its compact dimensions, Ø 50 mm x 82 mm, and weight of approximately 350 g including batteries make it easy to carry in the tool case of an acoustic technician, maintenance operator or safety manager. Power is supplied by 2 x 9 V DC batteries, heavy duty or alkaline type, and the instrument includes a built-in battery test indicator to help avoid checks performed with insufficient power.

The specified total harmonic distortion is ±2% in the 94 dB range and ±5% in the 114 dB range. This value is important because it indicates the quality of the signal generated by the calibrator. A stable and controlled signal makes it possible to verify the measuring chain more reliably, including microphone, sound level meter, internal electronics and reading settings. Power consumption is approximately 7 mA, a low value suitable for practical use in periodic checking activities.

The acoustic calibrator is particularly useful in all applications where sound level measurement data must be reliable and repeatable. In industrial environments, it can be used to check sound level meters used in production departments, test rooms, machine inspections, noise assessments, maintenance and occupational safety. In environmental applications, it is useful for preparing surveys near roads, construction sites, residential areas, schools, plants and zones subject to acoustic monitoring.

Correct use normally involves checking the sound level meter before the measurement and again at the end of the survey. This allows the technician to verify whether the instrument has maintained its response throughout the session. If the difference between the initial and final check is abnormal, it is advisable to inspect the microphone condition, coupling with the calibrator, battery charge, possible shocks to the instrument and environmental conditions during measurement.

A practical recommendation is to insert the microphone into the calibrator without forcing it, keeping the microphone axis correctly centred in the cavity. During verification, the calibrator should be kept still, avoiding vibration, strong air currents and impulsive noise nearby. Even though the generated signal is known, incorrect mechanical coupling or improper handling can make the reading unstable or less reliable.

The LUTRON SC-942 acoustic calibrator is therefore a practical solution for technicians, laboratories, maintenance operators and quality managers who need to quickly check the response of sound level meters. The combination of 1000 Hz frequency, 94 dB and 114 dB levels, compatibility with 0.5" and 1" microphones, aluminium housing, battery power and included accessories makes it suitable for periodic sound level meter checks, field inspections and professional activities where noise measurement must be more controlled and documented.
