The PCE-COG 10 climate meter is a portable instrument designed for indoor air quality control and simultaneous monitoring of carbon monoxide CO, carbon dioxide CO2, temperature and relative humidity. It is suitable for workplaces, offices, schools, laboratories, warehouses, technical rooms, production departments, HVAC environments, enclosed spaces and areas where microclimatic conditions and the presence of gases affecting safety, comfort, ventilation and occupant wellbeing must be checked.

The main function of the instrument is to provide immediate and documentable environmental control. Carbon monoxide is a dangerous gas that can originate from incorrect combustion, boilers, generators, stoves, engines, technical systems or poor ventilation. Carbon dioxide is an important indicator of air quality and air exchange in occupied rooms. Measuring CO, CO2, temperature and humidity at the same time provides a more complete overview of the environment and helps identify abnormal or improvable conditions.

The PCE-COG 10 measures carbon monoxide from 0 ... 1000 ppm, with 1 ppm resolution and ±5% F.S. accuracy. This measurement is useful for checking environments where combustion emissions may be present, technical areas, equipment rooms, workshops, maintenance areas or spaces where air safety needs to be verified. The ppm reading provides a direct and easily interpretable value, especially when the check is performed for preventive purposes or during a technical inspection.

Carbon dioxide measurement covers the range 0 ... 9999 ppm, with 1 ppm resolution and ±3% of value ±75 ppm accuracy. CO2 is a fundamental parameter in ventilation checks because high values may indicate insufficient air exchange, overcrowding, incorrect ventilation or the need to adjust an HVAC system. In offices, classrooms, meeting rooms, laboratories and enclosed spaces, CO2 measurement helps assess whether indoor air is adequately renewed.

In addition to gases, the device measures temperature and relative humidity. Temperature is measured from 0 ... 50 °C or 32 ... 122 °F, with 0.1 °C / °F resolution and ±2 °C / ±4 °F accuracy. Relative humidity is measured from 0 to 100% RH, with 0.1% RH resolution and accuracy of ±5% in the 0 ... 20% RH range, ±3.5% in the 20 ... 80% RH range and ±5% in the 80 ... 100% RH range. Humidity accuracy is stated as valid at 1 m/s air velocity and after 30 minutes of acclimatisation.

The 2” LCD display allows measured values to be read clearly. The product image shows an interface with CO, CO2, temperature and humidity values, as well as recorded data and statistical functions. The compact screen format allows the operator to check several parameters at the same time without separate instruments. This is useful during quick interventions, site inspections, maintenance work, environmental checks and air quality controls.

The device includes MIN, MAX and AVG functions, indicated in the manual as minimum, maximum and average values. This function is important because it allows the evolution of parameters to be observed during prolonged measurement. For example, in an office or meeting room it is possible to check whether CO2 increases during occupancy; in a technical room it is possible to observe the maximum CO value; in a laboratory or warehouse it is possible to compare temperature and humidity over time. Statistics are reset when the function is closed.

The datalogger is always active and can store up to 5000 measurement series. The sampling rate can be selected between 1 minute, 15 minutes and 1 hour, while recording duration can be set to none, 1 hour, 24 hours or 7 days. If “None” is selected, recording continues until the meter switches off automatically or the battery runs out. This makes the PCE-COG 10 suitable for long-term environmental monitoring, comparative analyses and checks before and after ventilation or maintenance interventions.

Data can be exported to a computer via the micro USB interface. To export measurements, the manual instructs the user to switch off the instrument first and connect it to a PC; the computer recognises the device as external memory and data are saved in CSV format. CSV format is particularly practical because it can be opened with spreadsheets, archived, shared or integrated into technical reports. This is useful for technicians, laboratories, safety managers and maintenance operators who need to document measured environmental conditions.

The PCE-COG 10 has visual and acoustic alarms. Alarm limits can be set for each measured parameter: CO2, CO, temperature and humidity. If a value exceeds the set limit, the instrument signals the condition visually and acoustically. This is important in preventive monitoring because it allows an out-of-limit condition to be recognised quickly without continuously watching the display. In technical rooms, enclosed environments, offices and laboratories, the alarm helps trigger timely action such as ventilation, system inspection or evacuation.

The device structure includes a CO and CO2 sensor in the upper part, temperature and humidity sensor on the rear, screen, left and right selection keys, ON/OFF key, Enter and REC key, Back key, ventilation slots, ¼” threaded tripod mount and micro USB interface. The tripod mount is very useful for prolonged measurements because it allows the instrument to be positioned stably at a representative room height, reducing errors caused by manual movement.

For prolonged measurements, mounting the PCE-COG 10 on a tripod is recommended instead of holding it by hand. This keeps the instrument fixed, prevents the sensor from being influenced by hand heat or the operator’s breath and maintains a constant measuring position. This is particularly important when monitoring indoor environments, meeting rooms, offices, classrooms, laboratories or technical rooms, because CO2 concentration and temperature can vary greatly depending on the measurement point.

Power is supplied by a 3.7 V / 1500 mAh battery. The instrument can be charged via micro USB and a 5 V DC, 1 A power supply. It can also be connected to mains power using a 100 ... 240 VAC, 50/60 Hz, 0.25 A input power adapter. The manual recommends ensuring the instrument is connected to mains power during data recording to prevent shutdown during long-term monitoring.

The stated operating conditions are 0 ... 45 °C with humidity below 95% RH without condensation, while storage conditions are -10 ... 55 °C with humidity below 95% RH without condensation. The instrument must not be used in potentially explosive atmospheres, has no ATEX protection and must be protected from splashing water, condensation, dust, corrosive gases, strong electromagnetic fields and excessive temperatures. These indications are important to maintain reliability and operating safety.

In practical applications, the PCE-COG 10 can be used to check air quality in offices, schools, meeting rooms, public areas, laboratories, warehouses, workshops, non-ATEX boiler rooms, environments with technical equipment, HVAC systems and areas where ventilation and comfort need to be verified. It can be used to assess the effectiveness of air exchange, identify high CO2 conditions, check CO presence and document temperature and humidity during maintenance or quality control activities.

For more reliable results, the instrument should be allowed to acclimatise in the measurement environment, ventilation slots should not be covered and the device should not be placed too close to the operator’s breath, open windows, ventilation outlets, heat sources or localised gas sources unless these are exactly the point being checked. After start-up, the manual states that the instrument takes approximately 30 seconds to start measuring CO, so it is advisable to wait for stabilisation before interpreting the value.
