The PCE-HWA 30-ICA air flow meter is a professional instrument for measuring air velocity, volumetric flow, ambient temperature and the Beaufort scale. It is designed for technical checks on ventilation, air conditioning, extraction, HVAC, heating, air handling systems, ducts, outlets, grilles, hoods, filters and environments where airflow behaviour must be verified. The included ISO certification makes the product particularly suitable for documented inspections, quality procedures, scheduled maintenance and professional technical checks.

The instrument uses the hot-wire measuring principle, a technology suitable for measuring air currents even at low speeds and in points where a vane sensor could be less practical or too bulky. The hot-wire sensor allows a compact structure and a slim probe, ideal for reaching internal areas of ducts, outlets, technical compartments, ventilation grilles, air discharge points and difficult measuring locations. The air velocity measuring range is 0.3 ... 30.0 m/s, with 0.01 m/s resolution and accuracy of ±3% ±0.1 m/s of the value.

Air velocity can be displayed in several units, making the instrument suitable for different technical documents, working habits and standards. In addition to m/s, the meter measures in ft/min with a range of 60 ... 5,904 ft/min, resolution of 0.01 or 0.1 ft/min and accuracy of ±3% ±20 ft/min of the value; in knots with a range of 0.6 ... 58.3 knots, resolution of 0.01 knots and accuracy of ±3% ±0.2 knots of the value; in km/h with a range of 1.0 ... 108.0 km/h, resolution of 0.01 km/h and accuracy of ±3% ±0.4 km/h of the value; and in mph with a range of 0.7 ... 67 mph, resolution of 0.01 mph and accuracy of ±3% ±0.2 mph of the value.

In addition to air velocity, the PCE-HWA 30-ICA can calculate and display volumetric flow. Flow is available in CMM, m³/min, with a range of 0 ... 999,900 m³/min and resolution of 0.001 ... 100 m³/min, and in CFM, ft³/min, with a range of 0 ... 999,900 ft³/min. The area can be selected from 0.001 to 999 m². This function is very useful for verifying the amount of air moved by a system, outlet, duct or extraction unit, provided that the operator correctly enters the area of the relevant section.

Ambient temperature measurement complements airflow control with a thermal value useful for evaluating operating conditions, environmental comfort and system performance. The temperature range is 0 ... 45 °C, with 0.1 °C resolution and ±1.0 °C accuracy; in Fahrenheit the range is 32 ... 113 °F, with 0.18 °F resolution and ±1.8 °F accuracy. This information is important in HVAC checks because temperature and air velocity are often analysed together to evaluate distribution, output and system behaviour.

The telescopic probe is a key feature of the product. The probe length is adjustable from 270 to 990 mm, with a diameter of 9.3 mm. The upper part is semi-rigid and allows the head to rotate, making it easier to position the sensor correctly in relation to the airflow direction. This configuration is very useful when working in deep ducts, narrow openings, ceiling outlets, grilles installed in awkward positions or points where the operator’s hand cannot directly reach the measuring area.

The air flow meter includes a datalogger and internal memory for 960 values. Stored values can be recalled on the display and transferred to a computer via the micro USB interface. This function allows measurements to be documented, values from different points to be compared, maintenance checks to be archived, reports to be prepared and airflow distribution in a system to be analysed. The download software supports more organised measurement management, useful for technicians, maintenance operators, plant managers and laboratories.

The integrated rechargeable battery has a capacity of 1000 mAh and 3.7 V supply. Charging is carried out via the micro USB interface using 5 V DC, 1 A. This solution makes the product suitable for mobile use, reducing the need for frequent battery replacement and allowing the instrument to be charged before scheduled jobs or off-site checks. The battery status indication warns when voltage drops below 3.4 V, helping the operator avoid sudden interruptions during measurement.

In practical use, the PCE-HWA 30-ICA is suitable for measuring air velocity at supply and return outlets, ventilation ducts, extraction hoods, air conditioning systems, cooling systems, industrial extraction systems, air handling units, filters, fans and technical environments. It can be used to check whether a system distributes air correctly, whether an outlet flow rate matches the design, whether a filter causes performance loss or whether part of the system has insufficient airflow.

For reliable measurements, the probe head must be correctly oriented in relation to airflow direction, the value should be allowed to stabilise and a representative point of the measured section should be chosen. In ducts or outlets, it is often useful to take several readings at different points and calculate an average value, because air velocity can vary significantly between the centre, edges and disturbed zones. Before calculating flow, the section area must be set carefully, because an incorrect area value leads to an incorrect flow calculation.

The instrument is not intended to measure heights, transmission clearances, form errors or the geometry of mechanical components. Its specific function is airflow, flow rate and temperature measurement. However, in technical applications, these data can affect system quality, correct outlet adjustment, ventilation balancing, energy efficiency, environmental safety and performance compliance with design or maintenance requirements.

The stated operating conditions are 0 ... 50 °C with 40 ... 80% RH without condensation, while storage conditions are -20 ... 60 °C with below 80% RH without condensation. Power consumption is 15 ... 35 mA without backlight and 70 ... 100 mA with backlight. The compact dimensions of 70 x 194 x 35 mm and the 400 g weight make the instrument easy to carry in its case and convenient for measurements in plants, laboratories, construction sites or technical departments.
