Cams

A cam is a tool mounted on a rotating shaft that can convert a rotary motion into a rectilinear reciprocating motion. The cams can be drum, disc or desmodromic. Their range of application is very broad and they are used in machines that have to perform very fast linear back and forth movements. One example of this is many automatic tool changers in machine tools. Another very common example can be found in the combustion engine of a car, where cams on a shaft allow the valves in the cylinder to open and close during the entire cycle of the piston. Cams in automatic machine tools (lathes) are also used to move the tool slides used for turning, drilling, tapping and much more. Their use enables the production of turned parts in high quantities and at low cost.
