The stroboscope is a fundamental measurement tool, used to capture still images of moving parts. In printing, for instance, it is used to monitor the printing roller interacting with the printed product. In the industry, the stroboscope serves to determine the speed of rotating parts, acting as a rotational speed measurement device.
Defining the application before purchasing is essential. A crucial aspect is the flash frequency: some industrial models reach thousands of hertz, allowing optical inspection even with rapid sequences.
The light source is another determining factor. Modern LED flashes rival xenon bulbs, offering powerful LED arrays that provide complete illumination. Some stroboscopes can enlarge the LED matrix to properly inspect wide and moving parts, such as paper strips. Additionally, there are models with UV LED light sources, ideal for non-destructive testing in maintenance.
The trigger for the light source is another important criterion. While a simple flash has an internal regulator, more sophisticated models feature a trigger input for external speed sensors, ensuring that the flashes are always synchronized with the object's speed. This feature is useful when rollers rotate at different speeds, such as in paper production or printed product testing.
Modern flashes also offer the ability to adjust the flash frequency and phase shift, briefly delaying the flash pulse to achieve an "optically rotating" image. This moves the marks of moving parts to the correct position.
For portable stroboscopes, power is a key factor. A battery-powered model is sufficient for occasional use, while for frequent use, a model with rechargeable batteries is recommended. Fixed models, on the other hand, are generally powered by an adapter or directly from the mains.
Finally, it is crucial to consider the IP protection class of the stroboscope, which indicates the level of protection against dust and water. For harsh environments, a model with IP67 protection class is ideal, as it offers optimal protection against external environmental influences.
