The main function of the PCE-675 is remote surface temperature measurement. The IR sensor detects the thermal energy emitted by the surface and converts it into a temperature value shown on the display. This allows checks to be carried out without touching the object, which is useful when the surface is hot, moving, difficult to access, delicate, dirty or must not be contaminated. The red laser pointer helps the operator align the instrument correctly with the point to be checked, while the integrated torch illuminates the measuring area in poor visibility.
The infrared measuring range is -50 ... +550 °C, with 0.1 °C resolution. Accuracy is ±3 °C in the -50 ... 0 °C range; above 0 °C, accuracy is ±1.5% or ±2.0 °C, whichever is greater. This makes the thermometer suitable for many technical applications, such as checking temperatures on pipes, ventilation outlets, radiators, motors, mechanical components, building surfaces, materials being processed, electrical equipment without direct contact and points where traditional measurement would be slow or impractical.
In addition to non-contact measurement, the PCE-675 has an input for a type K probe. With the type K thermocouple, the measuring range is -50 ... +850 °C, with 0.1 °C resolution and ±1.5% or ±1.5 °C accuracy, whichever is greater. This function is important when contact verification is required, when measuring surfaces where emissivity may make IR measurement less reliable, or when comparing the infrared value with a contact measurement.
The instrument also measures ambient temperature in the -20 ... +60 °C range, with 0.1 °C resolution. Accuracy is ±1.0 °C in the 0 ... 40 °C range and ±2 °C in the other ranges. This function links surface temperature to environmental conditions, which is important in building diagnostics, plant maintenance, comfort control, thermal bridge assessment, HVAC checks and diagnosis of thermal differences between air and surfaces.
The PCE-675 also integrates relative humidity measurement from 0 ... 100% RH, with 1% resolution. Accuracy is ±3.0% RH in the 35 ... 75% RH range and ±5% RH in the remaining range. Humidity measurement is useful when checking rooms, walls, technical environments, warehouses, construction sites, air conditioning systems and situations where condensation, high humidity or insufficient ventilation can cause comfort issues, material storage problems, corrosion or mould risk.
The device also calculates and displays dew point in the -20 ... +60 °C range, with 0.1 °C resolution and ±1.5 °C accuracy at 25 °C and 40 ... 80% RH. Dew point is a very useful parameter because it indicates the temperature at which moisture in the air may condense on surfaces. By comparing the infrared surface temperature with the dew point, the technician can assess condensation risk and identify potentially critical areas on walls, windows, corners, thermal bridges, cold pipes and poorly insulated surfaces.
The wet bulb temperature function measures in the -20 ... +60 °C range, with 0.1 °C resolution and ±1.5 °C accuracy at 25 °C. This parameter can be useful in environmental evaluations, ventilation checks, HVAC applications and analyses where temperature and humidity must be interpreted together. The ability to read several values with one instrument makes the PCE-675 particularly practical for quick field diagnosis.
The 13:1 optical ratio is essential for correct thermometer use. It means that the distance between the instrument and the surface is 13 times greater than the diameter of the measured spot. The farther the device is from the object, the larger the area actually read by the sensor. For accurate measurements, the object must be larger than the measuring spot; when the object is small, the thermometer must be moved closer. In practice, the checked surface should be at least twice the size of the measuring spot.
The adjustable emissivity from 0.1 to 1.0 allows the measurement to be adapted to different materials. Emissivity represents the ability of a surface to emit infrared radiation. Opaque, painted, plastic, ceramic, wood, asphalt, concrete and non-reflective surfaces are generally easier to measure, while shiny or polished surfaces such as stainless steel, aluminium and polished metals can generate incorrect readings if emissivity is not considered. The default value for many common materials is often between 0.85 and 0.98, but for absolute measurements the parameter must be set correctly.
The response time of ≤500 ms provides fast readings, useful when checking several points or quickly searching for a hotter or colder area. To locate a hot spot, it is advisable to aim the thermometer outside the area to be checked and gradually move it over the surface until the maximum value is found. This mode is useful in maintenance, overheating detection, checking electrical components, mechanical parts, friction, thermal losses and local anomalies.
The integrated laser is class 2, with power ≤1 mW and wavelength 630 ... 670 nm. The laser is used only for instrument alignment and does not take part in temperature measurement. When working at short distances or on very small surfaces, it can be switched off. It is important never to point the laser at the eyes of people or animals and to use the instrument in accordance with normal laser pointer precautions.
The PCE-675 has several operating modes. The mould alarm mode compares surface temperature with dew point and indicates risk using indicator lights. A yellow LED indicates mould risk, while a red LED indicates high probability. This function is particularly useful for building technicians, window installers, property maintenance personnel and operators who need to identify cold zones, thermal bridges or conditions that favour mould formation.
The temperature difference alarm mode compares ambient temperature with surface temperature. If the green LED lights up, the surface temperature is similar to the ambient temperature. The yellow LED indicates a difference of around 3 °C, while the red LED indicates a difference of more than 5 °C. This function is useful for checking heating elements, cooling devices, insulation, airflow, uneven surfaces and thermal anomalies on systems or components.
The environmental detection mode allows relative humidity, ambient temperature, dew point and wet bulb temperature to be displayed simultaneously. This combined display helps the technician interpret environmental conditions more completely, especially in technical rooms, construction sites, homes, warehouses, production areas and systems where temperature and humidity can affect materials, processes, comfort and safety.
The type K temperature mode allows the thermocouple to be connected and the type K sensor temperature to be displayed together with ambient temperature and surface temperature. This function is useful for comparisons between IR and contact measurement, for surfaces with uncertain emissivity, for technical component checks and for applications where a more direct thermal value is required.
To obtain reliable measurements, the instrument should be allowed to acclimatize when moved between environments with strong temperature differences. In these cases, it is advisable to wait approximately 30 minutes before performing critical measurements. It is also not advisable to measure directly on shiny or polished surfaces without proper preparation, as reflection can alter the result. The thermometer cannot measure through transparent materials such as glass: in these cases it measures the glass surface and not the object behind it.
If the surface is covered with dirt, oil, grease, dust or residue, it should be cleaned before measurement. Surface contamination can change emissivity and generate non-representative values. In technical checks, this is particularly important on motors, mechanical parts, pipes, industrial surfaces, bodywork components, machines and areas subject to dirt deposits.
In electrical and plant applications, the thermometer can be used to check abnormal heating on panels, terminals, switches, cables, power supplies and components, always respecting safety procedures and required distances. Before using the device in electrically live areas, insulation requirements must be verified. The instrument must not be used in potentially explosive atmospheres and must not be technically modified.
Power is supplied by a 9 V battery. Automatic switch-off after approximately one minute of inactivity helps preserve battery charge during daily use.
