PCE Instruments PCE-889B-ICA infrared temperature meter with ISO certificate, -50...+1000 °C, 30:1 optics and dual laser with ISO certificate

The PCE Instruments PCE-889B-ICA is a professional infrared temperature measuring device designed to detect temperature without direct contact with the object. The product includes ISO certification, making it especially suitable for documented inspections, quality departments, industrial maintenance and technical checks where a certified reference is required. Non-contact measurement is useful when the surface to be checked is hot, moving, difficult to reach, delicate or unsuitable for a contact probe.

The measuring range of -50 ... +1,000 ºC allows the instrument to be used in many industrial applications, from low-temperature checks to the inspection of components exposed to high heat. The 0.1 °C resolution provides detailed reading of thermal variations, while the stated accuracy of ±1% makes the instrument suitable for technical checks, diagnostics, preventive maintenance and operational inspections. The sampling time of less than 150 ms provides a fast response, useful for detecting sudden variations, hot areas or temperature differences across several points on the same surface.

The 30:1 distance-to-spot ratio is essential for correct use. It means that the measured area increases as the distance from the object increases: the farther the thermometer is from the target, the larger the detected surface will be. To obtain a reliable reading, the object must be larger than the measured area and, for more accurate checks, it should be at least twice the size of the measuring spot. This is important when checking pipes, bearings, motors, electrical panels, machine tool parts, automotive components or small technical details.

The dual laser beam helps the operator quickly identify the measuring area and correctly aim the instrument at the point to be checked. The laser does not measure temperature, but it supports aiming and improves practicality during scans, hot spot searches and checks on complex surfaces. During use, laser safety rules must be respected, avoiding pointing the beam at eyes, people, animals or reflective surfaces. The device is not suitable for potentially explosive areas and does not have ATEX protection.

An important technical feature of the PCE-889B-ICA is emissivity setting. Emissivity is adjustable from 0.1 to 1.0 and allows the measurement to be adapted to the surface material. Many organic, painted or oxidised surfaces have values close to 0.95, while shiny, polished or metallic surfaces such as stainless steel and aluminium can produce less accurate readings if not correctly compensated. In these cases, emissivity should be adjusted, or the measuring area should be covered with adhesive tape or matte black paint and allowed to reach the same temperature as the underlying material.

The backlit display provides clear readability in workshops, production departments, machine rooms or environments with limited lighting. The HOLD function keeps the measured value on the screen after the trigger is released, while the maximum value indication helps identify the hottest point during a scan. This is useful when searching for overheating on motors, bearings, gearboxes, electrical panels, moulds, systems, painted surfaces, mechanical components and systems subject to thermal stress.

High and low alarm functions, HAL and LAL, allow operating thresholds to be set to check whether a surface exceeds a maximum limit or falls below a minimum process value. LOCK mode enables continuous measurement, useful when the temperature trend must be monitored for a longer period without holding the trigger down. These functions make the PCE-889B-ICA suitable not only for instant measurement, but also for process diagnostics and preventive maintenance.

In industrial environments, the measuring device can be used for checks on machine tools, motors, bearings, gearboxes, moulds, electrical panels, HVAC systems, production lines, automotive components, mechanical parts, heated surfaces and maintenance equipment. In precision mechanics, temperature is a critical parameter because it can affect expansion, dimensional stability, couplings, tolerances, functional play and process repeatability. The instrument does not directly measure heights, transmission play or geometric errors, but it allows the operator to monitor a variable that can contribute to thermal deformation and dimensional changes.

To obtain reliable measurements, it is important to choose the correct working distance, set the emissivity according to the material, avoid untreated shiny surfaces, avoid measuring through glass or transparent surfaces and consider that steam, dust, smoke or condensation can obstruct the optics and reduce accuracy. When the instrument is moved between environments with very different temperatures, it should be allowed to stabilise before measurement. The PCE Instruments PCE-889B-ICA is therefore a complete professional solution for fast, non-invasive and documentable thermal checks thanks to the included ISO certification.
