The PCE-TUM 20 turbidimeter is a portable meter with a large display that meets all requirements for measuring turbidity on site. The turbidimeter's measuring range of 0 to 1000 NTU is divided into two automatic ranges to increase accuracy. The keypad allows very simple operation of the PCE-TUM 20 turbidimeter. It uses an LED light source with an 830 nm wavelength of the electromagnetic spectrum that is invisible to the human eye. Since the measurement is carried out in the visible light range, it is of little consequence that the test is tinged with colour. The positioning of the photodiodes at 180º and 90º angles allows the use of transmitted light for high ranges and scattered light for low measurement ranges. Calibration standards of 0 and 100 NTU that are included in the shipment allow the PCE-TUM 20 turbidimeter to be calibrated at any time. The PCE-TUM 20 turbidimeter complies with EN 27027 and ISO 7027.

 

 

Units of Measurement
The turbidimeter displays the measurement result in the NTU (Nephelometric Turbidity Unit). This measuring unit is specified in the ISO standard. NTU is identical to FTU (Formazine Turbidity Unit). In practice, two other units are used to measure turbidity: JTU and SiO2. JTU (Jackson Turbidity Unit) corresponds to 19 times NTU, while Silica Unit corresponds to 7.5 times NTU.

 

Measuring Principles
In the turbidimeter, an infrared LED works with 850 nm as a light source. A photodiode placed at a 90º angle to the light beam receives the light reflected by the particles in the measuring solution. (Scattered light or nephelometric measuring method for the lower measuring range). For the upper measuring range, another photodiode is located in front. (The measurement is carried out using the transmitted light method.) The meter can thus determine turbidity in NTU (FTU). With the use of an infrared LED, measurements in coloured liquids, such as red wine, are possible.
