DIN 69871 tapping chucks with axial compensation are designed for machines without rigid tapping capability. Their spring-loaded mechanism allows the tap to compensate for pitch differences, reducing tool stress and wear. They ensure good thread quality, with slight variations in pitch accuracy. Recommended for soft to medium-hard materials (light alloys, brass, aluminum, low-carbon steels) and lower cutting speeds. A cost-effective and reliable choice for standard threading on conventional machines.

Tapping chucks with a DIN 69871 shank and axial compensation are designed for traditional machines that can't perfectly synchronize the spindle's rotation with the Z-axis feed. This type of chuck features an internal, often spring-loaded, mechanism that allows the tap to "float" or compensate for differences between the thread pitch and the machine's feed rate.
How it works: The axial compensation (in both compression and tension) absorbs pitch errors caused by the lack of synchronization. When the tap engages the workpiece, the chuck either compresses or extends to ensure the tool follows the correct pitch without excessive force.
The Result: The threads produced are generally of good quality, but pitch precision can vary slightly. The compensation reduces stress on the tap, which extends its useful life.
When to Choose: This chuck is ideal for older machine tools or those not equipped for rigid tapping. It's an economical choice for standard threading where high precision isn't the main requirement. It's reliable for a wide range of materials, but its repeatability can be limited due to the inherent mechanical play.
The threads created with a compensation chuck are of good quality, but their success can be affected by the mating of components and wear on the chuck's mechanisms, which can lead to inconsistent thread quality. The precision and repeatability of the thread depth also depend on the machine's accuracy. Taps or dies used for this type of threading are subjected to greater forces during machining compared to rigid tapping.
The use of DIN 69871 tapping chucks with axial compensation is recommended for machining soft or medium-hard materials like light alloys of brass and aluminum, as well as low-carbon or low-tensile-strength construction steels. Slower cutting speeds are used because of the higher forces compared to rigid tapping.
