The broaching process is a machining technique that allows the creation of shaped external profiles on a pre-existing surface. It is distinguished by its high precision, repeatability, and execution speed, making it particularly suitable for sectors such as precision mechanics, automotive, aerospace, and manufacturing industries. Thanks to the use of CNC lathes and automated machining centers, this technique ensures uniform results, reducing production times and improving the final quality of machined components.
The broaching tool, combined with the broach, allows for controlled material removal until the desired shape is achieved. The broach is characterized by a sequence of progressive teeth that shape the external surface with extreme precision, ensuring perfect mechanical fits. This system guarantees maximum stability and functionality of assembled components, particularly shafts and polygonal couplings.
Broaching tools for external profiles are used in advanced machining processes, especially in gears, shafts, and other critical components. The use of CNC lathes enables consistent performance and dimensional repeatability even in high-speed machining. These tools are valued for their reliability, wear resistance, and versatility, making them essential for optimizing industrial production.
The most commonly used external profiles in broaching processes include:
Serrated profile, used to ensure a precise fit between shafts and hubs.
Hexagonal profile, used to create hexagonal shapes on pins, bolts, and transmission components.
Toothed profile, widely used in the automotive, aerospace, and industrial sectors, for applications such as gears, sprockets, and mechanical couplings.

Structure of the Broaching Tool
The broaching tool is a rotating device mounted on automatic and CNC lathes, consisting of a fixed part, which is clamped in the machine holder, and a rotating part on which the broach is mounted. This combination allows for precise machining, minimizing tolerance errors.
Operating Method
The broaching tool operates through material removal by compression. The forces involved are high, which is why the system is designed to minimize the necessary pressure. When the broach comes into contact with the workpiece, it oscillates around its axis, progressively removing material. This movement generates a variable contact point, evenly distributing stress along the external surface of the piece.
By repeating the machining process for multiple passes, the profile is generated with the desired length. This method ensures precise and repeatable results, guaranteeing perfectly shaped components.
Broaching is an essential technology for the production of complex external profiles, offering significant advantages in terms of precision, repeatability, and productivity. The use of CNC lathes and machining centers optimizes the process, reducing production times and enhancing the quality of components. Thanks to its reliability and versatility, the broaching tool is a fundamental solution for industries requiring high-quality standards and mechanical performance.
