Use of the Stroboscope in Measurement Technology
The stroboscope is an essential tool in measurement technology to obtain static images of moving parts. For example, in a printing press, it allows monitoring of the print roller during the production process. In the industry, the stroboscope is also used to determine the speed of rotating parts, making it crucial for measuring rotational speed in various industrial applications.
Aspects to Consider Before Purchase
Before purchasing a stroboscope, it is essential to define the specific application for which it will be used.
- Flash Frequency: In an industrial context, it can reach thousands of hertz, allowing optical inspections even at high speeds.
- Light Source Type: Modern LED stroboscopes offer excellent performance, comparable to traditional xenon bulbs. Powerful LED arrays allow complete illumination of an object, and some models enable the expansion of the LED array to inspect large moving parts, such as paper strips. UV LED stroboscopes are ideal for non-destructive testing during maintenance.
- Ignition System: A simple flash can have an internal regulator, but more advanced stroboscopes offer a trigger input for external control, synchronizing the flashes with the speed or vibration of the object. This feature is useful for applications such as paper production or checking printed products, where the rollers rotate at variable speeds.
- Phase Adjustment: Allows obtaining optically correct rotating images of moving parts.
Power and Protection
- Portable Stroboscopes: Power is a critical aspect. For occasional use, battery power may be sufficient, but for frequent use, it is advisable to opt for models with rechargeable batteries.
- Fixed Installation Stroboscopes: Generally powered by the mains, ideal for prolonged observations.
- IP Protection Rating: A parameter to consider for use in harsh environments. Models with IP67 protection offer optimal defense against dust and water.
Stroboscopic Effect
The stroboscopic effect makes periodic movements perceivable that would otherwise escape the human eye. This effect occurs when we do not see a continuous image but single frames that follow one another rapidly.
- If these frames always show the same content, it seems that there is no movement.
- If the frame cycle is longer than the movement period but not an integer multiple, the rotation or oscillation appears slowed down.
- If the frame interval is shorter than the movement frequency, the object seems to move in the opposite direction.
This phenomenon is also observable in films, where wheels or machine parts may appear to spin in reverse. This effect is also important for demonstrating and explaining processes.
Stroboscope Applications
The stroboscopic effect can slow down or optically stop rapid movements. To achieve this, specific timed lighting is required, achievable with stroboscopes that emit short light flashes with adjustable intervals. These tools allow seeing and evaluating anomalies in movement sequences, otherwise undetectable due to their speed. They also enable measuring rotational or oscillation speeds without contact.

Stroboscopes are also used for special effects in concerts and theaters, but unintentional flickering can pose risks in work environments, such as misjudging machine movements or visual disturbances. Therefore, it is important to design adequate lighting that minimizes flickering.
Conclusions
A stroboscope is a versatile tool with applications in various industrial and scientific fields, making visible details otherwise imperceptible and improving the safety and efficiency of production processes.
