PTM-CN-L Nuova PTM Live center Type CN1/L copying point, MEDIUM load, Morse Taper of your choice
(Incl. Tax: €185.32)
The CN series live centre for medium loads is a lathe support accessory designed to hold the workpiece from the tailstock side, ensuring axial stability, smooth rotation and reliable support during turning, finishing and machining operations at high spindle speeds. It is used whenever the workpiece must be supported between the chuck and the tailstock centre, reducing deflection, vibration, shape errors and geometric inaccuracies caused by tool pressure or by the length of the component being machined.
Based on the supplied image and technical information, the product features a compact and rigid external body, a ground cylindrical structure, a tapered shank for mounting in the tailstock quill and a rotating 60° point. The 60° point geometry provides stable centring in the centre hole of the workpiece and helps distribute the axial load correctly during rotation. This makes the CN series suitable for medium-duty machining on conventional lathes, CNC lathes, production turning machines, maintenance departments and workshops requiring a good balance between strength, precision and cost efficiency.
The CN series is intended for turning and finishing operations on different types of lathes, including applications with high rotational speed. In these conditions, continuous and stable contact between the centre point and the workpiece is essential to maintain the correct axial position of the component. During use, the live centre is fitted into the tailstock quill; the workpiece is then centred through its conical centre hole and supported by the rotating point. Since the point rotates together with the workpiece, sliding friction is reduced and wear is lower than with a dead centre. This is particularly useful when machining shafts, pins, long bushings, cylindrical components, automotive parts, precision mechanical parts and workpieces requiring high-quality finishing.
A key technical feature is the WPS – Water Protection System, indicated in the supplied documentation. This system protects the internal assembly of the live centre from dust, water, emulsions and coolant ingress. In modern machining, coolant is widely used and may contaminate bearings, reduce smoothness, cause internal corrosion and shorten the service life of the accessory. The WPS protection therefore helps preserve rotational accuracy and extend the life of the live centre, especially in production environments where machines operate for long periods or where coolant splashing is present.
The internal construction includes bearings and thrust bearings mounted in ground seats and protected by oil seals. This design allows the rotating point to withstand both radial loads generated by workpiece rotation and axial loads produced by the pressure of the tailstock against the centre hole. Permanent grease lubrication reduces routine maintenance requirements and provides an indicative service life of at least 1200 hours for each model, according to the technical information supplied. To maintain performance over time, it is advisable to periodically check the cleanliness of the point, the absence of abnormal play, smooth rotation and the condition of the workpiece centre hole.
The accuracy of a live centre has a direct impact on machining quality. Incorrect support or poor alignment may cause runout, unwanted taper, vibration, dimensional errors and poor surface finish. For this reason, before use it is important to check the alignment between spindle axis and tailstock axis, clean the machine taper carefully, remove chips from the shank and apply tailstock pressure progressively. In finishing, light grinding or precision turning applications, even small centring errors can affect the final result; selecting a rigid, protected and stable live centre is therefore essential to maintain process reliability.
The CN series live centre for medium loads is suitable for mechanical workshops, maintenance departments, subcontracting production, automotive machining, toolmaking, component repair and general turning operations. It is recommended when a robust, easy-to-use and reliable support accessory is required, especially in machining environments where coolant is used. The correct model should be selected according to the machine taper, workpiece dimensions, expected axial load, rotational speed and machining type. For best performance, excessive pressure on the workpiece should be avoided, centre holes should be kept clean, temperature should be monitored during long operations and the live centre should be replaced if play, noise or loss of accuracy occurs.
