Bench polishing machines

Polishing must not be confused with heavy grinding. Cotton, cloth and felt wheels are principally intended for pre-polishing and finishing and should not be used to remove heavy gates, risers or substantial stock. On foundry castings, major projections should first be reduced with a suitable grinder or belt deburring machine. The bench polisher is used in subsequent stages to soften rough-grinding marks, remove small irregularities, blend the surface and prepare it for its final treatment.

Wire brushes are suitable for removing oxidation, surface contamination, light scale and limited burrs. Crimped-wire brushes offer a progressive, relatively flexible action, whereas twisted-wire or more rigid constructions act more aggressively. Selection must consider wire material, diameter, density and brush construction. Excessive pressure does not necessarily increase productivity: it bends the wires, prevents their tips from working correctly, generates heat and can encourage fragment release.

Non-woven abrasive wheels reduce scratches, blend surfaces, remove light oxidation and create satin finishes. Firmer constructions retain their shape and act more decisively on edges, while flexible wheels follow radii, blends and formed surfaces. Grit and density should be selected according to the initial component condition. Applying an extremely fine tool directly to a deeply marked surface prolongs the process and increases heat without efficiently removing the original defects.

Cotton, stitched cloth, loose-leaf cloth and felt wheels are used for pre-polishing and final polishing. Stitched constructions provide greater firmness and control, whereas softer wheels conform to curved and complex surfaces. Felt can be useful for defined areas and precision components. Each wheel must be paired with a compound compatible with the material and the stage of the process. A preliminary cutting compound does not produce the same result as a final lustre product.

Polishing compound should be applied in moderate quantities. An overloaded wheel becomes greasy, accumulates heat and deposits residue on the component. Small amounts applied at regular intervals are more effective. Wheels used with different compounds should remain separate, since contamination from a more aggressive compound can reproduce scratches during final polishing. Tools used on different metals should also be identified and stored separately.

Flat surfaces should be presented with a sufficiently broad contact area and moved continuously across the wheel. Remaining on one point can cause overheating, waviness and variations in gloss. Edges require light passes to avoid unintentionally rounding functional dimensions. Curved surfaces are processed by progressively rotating the component so the wheel follows the contour without producing flats.

The component should be presented to the working area specified by the manufacturer, generally so wheel rotation tends to push it downwards and away from the operator rather than lifting or pulling it. Sharp edges, cavities, holes and open profiles must not be aimed into the rotation in a position where they could catch in wires, fibres or wheel layers. Entanglement risk increases with soft wheels, small parts and irregular geometries, making a secure grip and appropriate holding method essential.

Long components require external support so their weight does not change the contact angle. Small, thin, hot or difficult-to-hold parts require pliers, jigs or fixtures without projecting elements that could enter the rotating tool. Simply increasing hand pressure does not provide adequate control. The holding method must allow the operator to govern workpiece orientation and movement throughout the operation.

Aluminium and light-alloy castings require tools that resist loading and an extraction strategy suitable for potentially combustible dust. Cast iron may have a hard outer skin and produces fine dust. Brass and bronze benefit from clean brushes and wheels, controlled pressure and a progressive finishing sequence that limits visible scratching. Stainless steel should be processed with dedicated accessories not previously contaminated by carbon-steel particles.

Material separation is particularly important when manufacturing cookware, trays, cutlery, handles, taps, decorative components and household fittings. A wheel used during preliminary cutting should not be transferred to the final-polishing stage. Components intended for food-contact applications must be cleaned of polishing-compound residue using methods and cleaning agents appropriate to their final use.

Workpiece temperature is controlled primarily through moderate pressure, continuous movement and an efficient working tool. Increasing force when a wheel no longer cuts effectively worsens the problem and may overheat the component. The tool should instead be cleaned or replaced and the process divided into progressive stages. Work must stop when a component becomes too hot for safe handling. Water or coolant must not be introduced into machines designed exclusively for dry operation.

Some bench polishers provide different tooling positions on the two shaft ends. One side may retain a brush for preliminary cleaning while the other carries a cloth wheel for finishing. The component should be cleaned before moving between stations so coarse residue is not transferred to the finer tool. Two workstations improve flexibility but do not remove the need to verify wheel compatibility with machine speed, motor capacity and guarding.

Models with selectable speeds allow wheel behaviour to be adapted to the material and process. Higher peripheral speed may improve the action of certain wheels but also increases heat, aggressiveness and the consequences of catching. A lower speed can provide greater control on small components and delicate finishes. Every accessory must remain suitable for the machine’s actual operating speed and must never exceed its own manufacturer’s limit.

Compact machines with open shafts and limited overall dimensions suit goldsmithing, jewellery work, precision workshops and maintenance of small components where access from different directions is required. Configurations with guards and extraction ports are more appropriate for departments with continuous use and greater production of dust or polishing residue. Industrial machines with more substantial construction provide increased stability for more demanding wheels and components within their approved operating range.

Guards and protective hoods must cover the parts of the wheel not required for the operation and help contain fragments. Extraction ports should be connected to a system compatible with the processed material. Aluminium and light-alloy dust must not be collected indiscriminately together with ferrous dust and sparks. Textile fibres and polishing compounds can also accumulate in ductwork and require planned cleaning.

A bench polisher should not automatically be treated as a bench grinder. A rigid grinding wheel may only be fitted when the NEBES Elettromeccanica or TOMMASI & BONETTI model is expressly designed for it and equipped with the correct shaft, flanges, guard and work rest. In such a configuration, abrasive type, grit, grade, structure, bond, dimensions, bore and maximum speed must be verified. An incompatible wheel can generate vibration, fracture and unsafe working conditions.

Work-rest adjustment and wheel clearance apply to machines configured with a rigid grinding wheel. The support must be stable, aligned and maintained at the clearance prescribed by the manufacturer. Excessive space may allow the workpiece to become trapped between the wheel and rest, whereas insufficient clearance can cause contact. As wheel diameter decreases through wear and dressing, the setting requires periodic correction with the machine stopped and isolated.

The rules for a rigid-wheel work rest should not automatically be applied to brushes and flexible polishing wheels. Their deflection creates different trapping points. Workpieces must be guided as instructed for the polisher and, when necessary, through a dedicated fixture that cannot enter the space between the wheel and a fixed component.

Before starting, the brush or wheel must be checked for damage, correct centring and secure mounting. Missing wires, deformation, fraying, cuts or impact marks require replacement. A no-load test should be performed after installation with guards in place and the operator outside the plane of rotation. Vibration, abnormal noise or lateral movement must be investigated before processing begins.

Maintenance includes checking shafts, flanges, spacers, bearings, guards, switches and stopping devices. Extraction ports must be cleared of dust, fibres and compound deposits. Cleaning must be performed with the machine isolated from power and without dispersing potentially hazardous residue. Regular maintenance reduces vibration, preserves motor efficiency and helps identify component wear before a failure occurs.

Important purchasing criteria include structural rigidity, bench stability, smooth rotation, shaft arrangement, compatible tools, mounting systems, guarding, extraction provision, selectable speeds where available, permissible duty cycle and availability of wheels, brushes and replacement parts.
